CD Review
25 Years Of chicago Blues Piano Vol. 2 Instrumentals
Barrellhouse Chuck
Viola Records
By Tom Hyslop, Blues Review Nov. 2006

Blues CD Cover Art Barrelhouse Chuck's splendid 25 years of Chicago Blues Piano, Volume 2 (Viola 05232 ), which pulls together Chuck Goering's work in such traditional styles as boogie-woogie duets ("Nutty Boogie" with Erwin Helfer), Guitar-piano duets (" Viola's Stomp'", with Ben Andrews) ( organ boogie-woogie duets" Boogie for Steve Winwood" with Jim Mckaba), and solo piano workouts ( the syncopated " Gigolo"). For the non-keyboard-focused listener, Volume 2 serves up plenty of incredible full band material featuring trusted players Hash Brown, Billy Flynn, Calvin " Fuzz" Jones, Willie and Kenny Smith, Sam Lay, S.P. Leary, and Harmonica Todd in vintage Chicago mode. Dig the "44-inspired " Past life Blues", the jumping " On The House" Hound Dog Taylor's "Walkin' The Ceiling", and tributes to Little Brother Montgomery, Pinetop Perkins, and Sunnyland Slim. Immaculately executed and sonically restored.
